Digital: a chance for all
For more than twenty-five years, Amazon has been obsessed with customer satisfaction – for all customers, regardless of their consumer choices. We defend a society where the needs of every person, every entrepreneur are taken into account, where innovation creates products, services and opportunities that make life better for everyone.
We are proud to have listened to and encouraged numerous economic players, be they customers, entrepreneurs, authors or developers, to have responded to their needs and to have helped them develop their business. We continue and we will continue to invest in France for this purpose … stubbornly.
Because digital is a chance for all French people. It breaks the isolation of people far from urban centers by allowing them to stay in touch with those who are far away and to have access to cultural products and services. Online commerce offers equality of choice, price transparency and objective information regardless of where you live. It simplifies the daily life of people with reduced mobility. It allows all parents to organize their daily lives effectively and to give more time to what really matters.
Digital is a chance for French commerce. More than 10 000 French SMEs are selling today on the amazon.fr website. 80% of them take advantage of Amazon’s services to export all over the world. They found on the Internet a way to increase their activity and to shine French know-how internationally, allowing them to create more than 10,000 jobs. Whether manufacturing companies, start-ups, producers, or traders, Amazon’s marketplace offers all these companies a simple solution to extend their catchment area to all Europe and the world to find new opportunities.
Digital is also a chance for employment. The technologies that Amazon is developing create jobs, a lot of jobs. Although robotization in the manufacturing industry has doubled in the last twenty years in industrialized countries, the total number of jobs in the retail trade has continued to grow (as recalled by the figures published by INSEE and by the General Management of Companies) over the same period. We have everything to gain by putting technologies at the service of the French. For far from replacing human beings, robotic technologies will make it possible to invent new services, thereby creating new jobs. The opening of the site equipped with Amazon Robotics technology in Bretigny-sur-Orge is a concrete example since it will lead to the creation of more than 1,000 jobs in the next three years. Should we consider this a regression? Certainly not.
Digital is a chance for culture. Thanks to services such as Kindle Direct Publishing and Prime Video, Amazon is actively involved in the production and promotion of French culture. Thousands of French authors have already self-published via these services and we welcome this new freedom of expression that allows unknown authors to emerge and meet a large audience. Who knows that the fourth most read author in France has been discovered thanks to Amazon? What is true for publishing is also true for cinema. Prime Video has recently announced several original French productions including two fiction (Voltaire, Mixed and Operations Totems) that will be available in more than 200 countries and territories around the world in 2021.
Digital is also a chance for the planet. Who today denies that public transport is less polluting than individual cars? Why would it be different for goods? E-commerce brings freight transport together, allowing a single vehicle to deliver dozens of customers in the same geographical area, thus replacing dozens of individual vehicles, drastically reducing CO2 emissions. At Amazon, we are aware of ecological issues and have made strong commitments: we are committed to achieving the objectives of the Paris Agreement by 2040, 10 years ahead of the target set by the Paris agreement set at 2050; we will invest $ 100 million for reforestation; we ordered more than 100,000 electric vehicles to reduce our carbon footprint, the largest order of electric delivery vehicles ever made. Since 2018, 50% of the electricity consumed by AWS data centers comes from renewable energy sources. Let’s take this opportunity to remind you that according to the latest GreenIT.fr study, a European reference in the field of responsible computing, data centers come last on the scale of digital environmental impacts. To accompany these changes towards an eco-friendly society, innovating is essential. We do it every day. 50% of the electricity consumed by AWS data centers comes from a renewable energy source.
